First of all, this is an experiment! It is an attempt to combine the baroque essence of violas with jazz harmonies; polyphonic writing of the 16th century with the rhythmic structures of the late 20th century; the meditativeness of repetitive fragments with a continuous melodic development. All this is taken together with the poetry of Thomas Sterns Eliot.

The first songs from the "Landscapes" and "Portrait of a Lady" series were written for voice and two viola da gamba and were performed by this line-up. At some point a wonderful double bass player Vladimir Volkov, who happened to be nearby, heard himself in this music. A bit later the concert halls heard these pieces with his participation, too. Vladimir’s participation added an intriguing inprovisational twist to the line-up and became a kind of zest. For me, as a composer, it opened inexhaustible possibilities for new experiments.

The following pieces were created for this new set of instruments (voice, two viola da gamba and double bass). The compositions are a small cantata on the same-name poem called "Marina" and the instrumental piece "Young Thomas" dedicated to TS Eliot. It is very important to mention Vladimir Gavryushov, who, together with me, created an exquisite baroque flair that softened some sharp edges of this music.

The body cannot live without a soul, and the soul of this music has become the unique voice of Alice Ten. The breath this voice brings is very inspiring.

There are many J.S. Bach pieces I've heard and enjoyed throughout my life, but it was especially Glenn Gould and his box set who made me fall in love and inspired me to take a deep dive and explore Bach's catalogue a few years ago. Then my music focus shifted for a while, but this interpretation just reignited my obsession again. I love this project, the included booklet and score as well! I'm late to join, but look forward to listening to the other and any future releases :) Gerrit
