about

The title of this release refers to two things, the first being the 25 years “covered” by the eponymous new work, whose time and intensity structure reflects various seismic, astronomical, political etc events over the time from 1991 to 2015; the second thing is (almost) the time between the moments of the first and the last tracks were created. Both pieces were played and recorded in Saint-Petersburg. Down the River was one of my early experiences with semi-aleatoric form, and, unlike many other of my scores and recordings of that time this one still sounds interesting enough to me. This track has never been released - luckily, it has survived the last 21 years; sadly, some of the people who participated in that session are now gone. Between the two St.-Petersburg pieces are the two Duesseldorf ones: the Kafkaesque Der Prozess #1 is a duo for two megaphones and Bezaubernde Gulbahar is a four movement piece for 13 players, loosely based on Omar Khayam's poems, that was used as ouverture and intermezzos in both Duesseldorf Shauspielhaus and Moscow Art Theatre productions of Ivan Vyrypaev's The Drunks.

Twenty-Five-Year Symphony was commissioned by Baltiysky Dom Festival Theatre in 2015 and first performed at the opening of the 25th Baltic House International Theatre Festival on October 1st 2015. It is a unique festival led by a creative and adventurous team, thanks to whose energy and support this musical project was made possible.
