PadraigC Stunning release. The female & male vocal solos are beautiful as are the group ones. I don't understand the language, but the human voice & music transcends all that.
I don't hear much of that style & combination of singing, so the release notes helped put it into context for me.

about

Having founded the vocal ensemble Eleon (St-Petersburg, 2008) that included mostly folkloric vocalists I, myself a Russian traditional singing practitioner, was looking for ways to combine this type of singing with contemporary composition techniques. Khozhdeniye is built on the idea of deriving the entire pitch and form structure of a large piece from a polytonal combination of several solo folk songs. In a way, Stimmung was a reference for me, but Stockhausen’s formulaic «ritual» material was made up, stylised, whereas I wanted to use pre-existing real songs as basic elements, and the songs were proposed by the ensemble members. I had asked them to choose songs that could work as personal ones, so that they would be connected with some deep existential experience – the soliloquys woven into the texture of the piece are accounts of those experiences. The piece starts with solo songs accompanied by «superchords» based on various summations of the modal sets of all the songs. This is followed by quodlibets combining the songs polyphonically. The only song that does not appear until the end is used as a finale – deus ex machina, it seemed like an appropriate solution at the time.
