In May 2022, Peter Ivshin and I were returning from St. Petersburg to Moscow after the concert of the "reMusik" festival. Sitting in the car of the night train, we thought about improvisational music and the interaction of performers.
That was when the idea of writing an album in which two drummers would interact came into my mind for the first time. I wanted to combine both groove and free abstract improvisation in drumming, so that two drummers sound like one, but at the same time, with a lot more colors than one drum set has.
At that time, I was attracted to grunge, electro-acoustic abstractions and minimalism. And then I just started to get involved in dark jazz. Elements of influence from all these directions can be heard in this album.
Thе album can be called a journey into two parallel realities, into two stories that were recorded without a single take and within one acoustic space. A concert without spectators, in which the most fascinating thing happens in the sound communication between the musicians.
In "Nowness" there are two worlds of dreams - futuristic fantasies about the future and nostalgia for a bygone era in which we did not exist, a reflection on an unlived life. These images naturally emerged during the mixing phase of the album.
But during the recording process, the musicians were living in the present moment, "here and now", expressing impromptu ideas in sound.
In figurative language I would describe both parts of the album in the following words:
Part I
“In a parallel futuristic world, humanity also needs healing. And the search for this healing leads to a cure called passion. And this passion is seen as a healing pill: it is a train of escapism that is carried away at breakneck speed from sorrows and pain, and this train cannot be stopped. This eternal ahistorical rave can only end in a dead-end matrix high."
Part II
“The key to saving exists, and it is in the past. In a parallel futuristic world, there are people like us, tormented by insomnia and thirsting for amnesia, drowned in a matrix buzz, lost in the algorithm of consumption. Our common path to rebirth is to comprehend everything that happened to us before, to understand it, to accept it, and to make all this the foundation for spiritual purification. And to fill the holes with phantom, but no less real memories.”
I would not like to impose such specific images on the listeners, these are my personal associations. I would like each listener to have their own spiritual responses on the album.

Fragile cello and piano recall the bleak childhood of brothers Sebastian and Daniel Selke spent in a large prefab estate in East Berlin. Bandcamp New & Notable Jan 10, 2017
Good gracious! How could I let this eclectic masterpiece almost drown in my wishlist? The base may be jazz, but it's stylistically all over the place - in the best possible way.! Maestro Hadzimanov and his crew paint a very colorful set of pictures here, great! And it's coming with a homage to Mr MoonJune, the formidable Leonardo Pavcovic!
Double hooray for Bandcamp! The first one in general, for hosting all this great music and the second one for this Friday's wonderful Covid-19 campaign! Carsten Pieper
